COMMON QUESTIONS

wood sourcing

Pennsylvania is home to some of the finest quality hardwoods in the world. Known for their beautiful colors and textures, we are extremely lucky to live and operate in the southeast region with access to an endless supply of these premium quality wood choices. We also have access to a sawmill with an immense selection of high-quality exotic woods, which we use to add a unique touch to some of our items. Each piece of raw lumber is carefully inspected and hand-selected from our local sawmill. We pay close attention to how the wood was cut, where it came from in the tree, and the unique grain and color of each piece. These premium wood choices and careful observation allow us to craft items of a superior caliber.

processing times

Ready to Ship (RTS) - When you purchase a one-off item, you can expect it to be on its way to you within 2 business days of placing your order.

Made to Order - Our current estimate for processing made-to-order items is 5 business days after you place your order. This is an estimate only and should not be taken as a guaranteed delivery or ship date. If you need an item by a certain date, please reach out to us before placing your order. We try to overestimate our processing times so that we do not disappoint, but in some cases, we are able to get your item made and sent to you sooner if we know what your exact needs are.

caring for your Cornerstone items

Our items are intended to be used - for a long time. Wood is a natural material that responds to changes in temperature, moisture, and air. If you plan to use your items as they are intended, it’s very important to take good care of them in order to make them last for future generations. Each item includes detailed care instructions and you can also take a look at our Care Guide for more information on this. The most important thing we can’t stress enough is DO NOT use a dishwasher or water-submersion to clean your Cornerstone items. This intense exposure to water and heat can quickly ruin your items in just one wash.

wood movement & warping

Wood is a natural material and as such, it interacts with its environment.

One characteristic of wood is its tendency to move. Wood movement is a natural process where wood expands and contracts due to changes in moisture.

This can sometimes lead to warping. Warping occurs when there is uneven drying or moisture absorption in the wood. It’s a common occurrence and can manifest as a twist, cup, or bow in the wood.

Various factors contribute to warping, such as changes in humidity, temperature, and how the piece is stored.

Managing wood movement & warping

  • Stable Environment: Keep your board in a stable environment with consistent humidity and temperature.

  • Proper Storage: Store your board on its edge, away from direct heat sources and out of direct sunlight.

  • Regular Oiling: Treat your board regularly with a suitable food-safe mineral oil or Cornerstone Conditioner to help maintain a consistent moisture content and reduce the likelihood of warping.

  • Gentle Cleaning: Hand wash the board with mild soap and warm water. Dry it thoroughly with a cloth and store on edge immediately after washing.

Embrace the Character

Cornerstone items are made from real wood. Movement is a normal and natural occurrence with wooden items, especially when they’re used in the kitchen and exposed to water.

Moving and slight warping add to the individual character of your board, making it truly one-of-a-kind. While it’s good to minimize excessive warping through proper care, some movement is completely natural and a part of the wood’s charm.

By understanding and embracing wood’s natural tendencies, and by following the care tips provided, you can enjoy the beauty and functionality of your cutting board for many years to come.

replacements, refunds, & returns

Shipping Damages - If your item arrives damaged from transport, please contact us within 5 days of receiving your order with photos of the damaged item and we will happily replace the item at no cost to you. As each item is handmade, we do not offer exchanges for items because you want a different wood type or design.

Returns/Refunds - Since we are a very small family business we do not offer returns for items. However, if there is a problem with your order due to a defect in wood or workmanship, please reach out to us and we will do everything in our power to correct the issue and ensure that you are completely satisfied.

We are unable to replace items that are damaged due to improper use, lack of care, dropping, crushing, water submersion, dishwasher exposure, or silly things like knife marks in a cutting board (these items are made from real wood and will show age and wear as they are used over time).
